Pophams

With three bustling locations, all equally worth the visit, Pophams belongs on every pastry lover’s map. Working with seasonal British and Italian produce, their London Fields location transforms into a lively neighbourhood restaurant, with pastas and small plates designed for sharing.

TOAD

This open-plan bakery on Camberwell’s High Street offers daily delights, including sourdough bread, croissants, and cinnamon buns, all made with UK-grown, sustainably-farmed grain. Their menu features seasonal, sustainably sourced ingredients; arrive early to secure the goods!

Sourdough Sophia

Sourdough Sophia emerged during lockdown, founded by passionate bakers in their dining room. They then opened their bakery, championing sustainability and using regenerative farming flour. Currently offering takeaway only, they’re set to expand with a second location on Essex Road in 2024.

The Dusty Knuckle

A coffee and a sandwich from this Dalston institution are 100% worth the weekend wait time. However, if you’re only after pastries and a loaf, you can pre-order online to skip the queue. Plus, you can now order wood-fired pizzas from their Haringay location for delivery (if you’re lucky enough to live within the catchment area).

Chestnut Bakery

Watch croissants being made and enjoy the convenience of having this fantastic bakery accessible in Central London with locations in Belgravia and Covent Garden. Their croissant has been named the best ‍in the UK for 2023, need I say more?

FORNO

Forno, created by the team behind Ombra, is a bakery, pastificio, and deli tucked under a railway arch in London Fields. They’re best known for delectable sweet and savoury Italian treats. Make sure to try a maritozzo and the Pistachio Cornetto.

E5 Bakehouse

A few steps away from London Fields, you’ll find e5 bakehouse under a set of railway arches. When they first opened in 2011, they focused purely on sourcing great ingredients to make and sell the highest quality loaves of sourdough. However, e5 soon grew to become its own educational hub and a bustling café, serving, freshly-roasted coffee alongside a sprawling selection of impossible-to-choose-between baked goods.

Kossoffs

Founded in the 1920s by Jewish refugee Wolf Kossoff, this independent artisanal bakery, now located in Kentish Town, is a must-visit. Don’t miss trying their delectable chocolate halva cookies, cinnamon cruffins, and earl grey swirls.

Casey’s

A local secret in Clapton, Casey’s is a blend of bakery and deli, open only a few days a week and takeaway only. Stop by for a good coffee to accompany you as you explore the neighbourhood, and don’t forget to try their cardamom buns.

Helen Evans (ex-head baker at now-closed Flor), has opened a new neighbourhood bakery in East Dulwich, Eric’s. It’s already in high demand, they’re only open on Fridays at 8am and on Saturdays at 9am until sold out.

Established in 2013, Bread Ahead is famous for its doughnuts using British sourced ingredients from traders in Borough Market . Their bakery schools offer artisan baking classes, perfect for those eager to learn the craft. Find them at multiple locations in the city and abroad!

Buns From Home

Buns from Home is a bakery specialising in hand-rolled, proper-butter cinnamon buns, hailed as the best in the country. Founded by Barney during the first lockdown, it all began in his mum’s home kitchen. Since then, this lockdown baking project has grown, and you can now find their buns at multiple locations across the city.

Fortitude Bakehouse

Fortitude Bakehouse is a takeaway-only spot in Russell Square that specialises in cakes made from sourdough. Now, are you willing to queue for delicious baked goods? There’s only one right answer, and I’d suggest you get there early.

Layla

Layla Bakery, a 2021 addition to the Ladbroke Grove neighbourhood, offers a tempting range of pastries, sweet treats, sandwiches, and cheese toasties. Specialising in sourdough, wild grains, and traditional baking methods, they prioritise seasonal ingredients sourced at their peak. They’re open 7 days a week so there’s really no excuses.

Margot Bakery

100% vegetarian, Margot Bakery offers a daily-changing menu featuring homemade granola, sandwiches, salads, pastries, and specials. Renowned for their babka and sourdough challah, this East Finchley bakery, founded by artisan baker Michelle Eshkeri in 2016, has become a beloved fixture in North London.

Little Bread Pedlar

The Little Bread Pedlar is an artisan bakery that has been serving sourdough, focaccia, croissants, brownies, kouign amanns, and cinnamon buns since 2010. With multiple locations, including one in Pimlico, you can enjoy their signature pastries and breads all week, along with coffee from Coleman Coffee Roasters.

Maya’s Bakehouse

Back in 2020, Maya Manwaring started a micro bakery out of her house in Brixton. What began as a lockdown project soon became a full-time sourdough business. After a successful crowdfund, in the Fall of 2023 she officially opened Maya’s Bakehouse in Tulse Hill, serving her signature loaves along with an array of delectable buns.

Toklas

A sit-down bakery and cafe on the Strand, Toklas Bakery serves some exciting pastries (think Bourbon peach Melba Danish) and Roman-style pizza slices. Note, they’re closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Beaten By A Whisker

Beaten by a Whisker is a small batch bakery behind St. James Street station in Walthamstow. They make fresh sourdough bread, cakes, and sandwiches, and their warm, sticky cinnamon buns alone are worth an early morning visit before they vanish.

Founded by Lele and Josh, Weirdough Bakery bakes fresh sourdough goods every single day. Highlights are the pizza, foccacia and baguettes. It’s around the corner from Beaten By A Whisker so well worth visiting both at the same time to really indulge.

Fabrique Bakery

Fabrique, a beloved bakery with multiple locations across several cities, including six in London, is renowned for its freshly baked sourdough bread, pastries, and sandwiches made with the finest ingredients and craftsmanship. Their concept is simple: only fresh, natural ingredients and traditional methods and their goods are delicious.

Tarn Bakery

Tarn Bakery sees Florin (ex-Pophams, Flor, Bread Ahead baker) opening a bricks and mortar just off Parkland Walk in North london. Sourdough is made using UK grains and pastries range from the classics to an array of seasonal sweet and savoury depending what their partner farmers have to offer week to week.

Suba

Artisan Wholesale bakery, Suba, is run by Head Baker, Pa Modou. This bakery does fantastic pastries and great coffee. Along with the classics are West African-influenced pastries such as Mango Baobab Danish and the Bantu Caraway Bun.

Pomme Bakery

Pomme Bakery is female founded and every pastry handmade by Ivie Egonmwan, the sole baker and owner. Hidden in Hoxton, this neighbourhood gem is everything you could want from a bakery with weekly specials and great coffee.
